Why Reflection is called the “DeepSeek of the West”
The nickname predates Beam, and launch coverage picked it up again.
Business Insider reports that the Wall Street Journal wrote in March 2026 that some investors had described Reflection as the “DeepSeek of the West”. The phrase became shorthand in social media posts about Beam's launch.
The comparison rests on two things: an open-weight strategy and a focus on efficiency. Reflection has raised billions of dollars from investors including Nvidia, Sequoia and Citigroup, and, according to Business Insider, confirmed a round at a $25 billion pre-money valuation in June.
CEO Misha Laskin argues that open models are the only way for organizations to truly own their AI: “if it's open, you can run it on your stuff, you can own it, you can control it, you can customize it.”
Takeaway
The label is about strategy and geography, not a claim that Beam beats DeepSeek on benchmarks.
